Marina (Claudia Gerini) and Vittorio (Luca Lianello) have just moved into their dream house, a starter twin home in a starter community. “Valle Serena” has a gated guard house, a small garden and, just on the other side of a paper-thin piece of dry wall, their nightmare neighbors. Slotko (Emilio De Marchi) and Bruna (Anna Marcello) live a noisy, rude and certainly not Italian lifestyle right next door. The sounds emanating from Slotko’s loud boom box even intrude on Vittorio’s dreams: but one morning the couple awakens to find that last night was no dream — robbers have stripped their entire house. Of course, Vittorio’s number one suspects are his marginalized neighbors and thus Nero bifamiliare begins its descent into the blackest of black comedies. With his experience with video clips, director/writer Federico Zampaglione (who is well known in Italy as a singer and songwriter in the popular band Tiromancino) finally created this feature, no longer restrained by three or four minutes. However, music is never far from Zampaglione’s mind, and the soundtrack of this film is replete with Tiromancino’s songs, which he deftly uses to underscore his skewering of the obsessive upward climb of the bourgeois.
